Stones mulled ‘retiring’ last season amid injuries
Manchester City and England defender John Stones disclosed that he contemplated retiring from professional football last season due to persistent injury problems, which sidelined him for over 30 matches across all competitions. The 31-year-old centre-back battled recurring hamstring and foot injuries that severely limited his playing time during the 2024-25 campaign.
Stones told BBC Radio 5 Live that the constant setbacks left him mentally and physically drained. “Last season was tough for me, to the point where I thought about stopping,” he said. “I didn’t want to do it. I had had enough of being so professional and trying to do everything right in my power, to then keep breaking down and not having the answers. It was a very difficult place to be in.” Despite maintaining rigorous fitness and rehabilitation regimes, the defender struggled to identify the causes behind his recurring injuries, which added to his frustration.
The injury challenges also prevented Stones from featuring for England under manager Thomas Tuchel since January, although Stones remains in contention to return for upcoming matches against Wales or Latvia. Before last season, Stones had been a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s defensive lineup at Manchester City, known for his composure, ball-playing ability, and tactical intelligence.
Stones appeared in only 11 Premier League matches last season, a sharp reduction from his usual involvement. Reflecting on his mindset during that period, he said, “My emotions were high. I wasn’t thinking straight. Deep down, I don’t think I would have ever done it [retired]. I said years ago when City wanted me to have a new challenge, I said ‘I am going to fight.’ That’s all I have known since I was a kid—why should I stop that now?”
The defender’s remarks highlight his resilience and determination to overcome adversity and continue competing at the highest level. His ongoing recovery and potential return will be closely watched by Manchester City as they aim to strengthen their defensive options in pursuit of domestic and European success. For Stones, renewing his fitness and form is critical to reestablishing his place in both club and country setups, reflecting a broader commitment to his professional longevity and contribution.
