Thomas Frank backs Spence to learn after substitution reaction
Thomas Frank moved to calm the situation around Djed Spence after the Tottenham full back’s visible frustration during the 3-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, insisting the defender understands his reaction was not ideal and must learn from it.
Spence was substituted at the City Ground and appeared perplexed as he left the pitch, marking the second time this season he has drawn attention for his body language toward Frank. The Tottenham head coach confirmed the issue has been addressed internally.
The incident follows an earlier moment after the 1-0 loss to Chelsea on Nov. 1, when Spence and Micky van de Ven failed to follow instructions to applaud the travelling supporters. Both players later apologised, but Frank made it clear that repeated situations of that nature are not sustainable.
Frank explained that Spence believed he was being withdrawn because of an injury, something the coaching staff did not think was the case. That misunderstanding, he said, contributed to the reaction and has since been discussed.
The Tottenham manager framed the issue as part of a wider learning process for a player still adapting to pressure and scrutiny at the top level. Spence, now 25, remains a key option despite the setback and is expected to start when Liverpool visit north London on Saturday.
Attention also turned to Brennan Johnson, whose reduced role has fuelled speculation of a possible January move. The Wales international has been an unused substitute in two of Tottenham’s last four league matches, despite finishing last season as the club’s leading scorer.
Frank stressed that competition for places has increased following the arrival of Mohammed Kudus, particularly on the right side, while noting Johnson’s versatility across the front line. He added that the congested fixture schedule makes squad depth essential.
Tottenham now turn their focus to Liverpool, with Frank underlining the need for unity and professionalism as the season intensifies. For Spence and Johnson alike, the coming weeks offer an opportunity to respond on the pitch and reinforce their importance to the squad.
