Tunisia and Tanzania Progress After Stalemate

Tunisia and Tanzania secured their places in the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-1 draw in Abidjan. The result ensured Tunisia finished second in Group C behind Nigeria, while Tanzania advanced as one of the best third-placed teams.

Cagey Opening

Both sides struggled to settle in a tense first half, producing just 0.12 expected goals combined in the opening 40 minutes. The breakthrough came shortly before half-time when referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Tunisia a penalty after a lengthy VAR review. Ibrahim Hamad was judged to have fouled Hazem Mastouri, and Gharbi converted from the spot for only his second international goal.

Tanzania Respond

Despite offering little in attack during the first period, Tanzania struck back soon after the restart. Novatus Miroshi found Feisal Salum, who fired a low shot from distance past Aymen Dahman to level the contest. The equaliser proved decisive, as neither side created clear chances in a subdued second half. Tunisia appeared content to protect their position in the group, while Tanzania focused on holding firm.

Knockout Picture

The draw confirmed Tunisia’s place in the last 16, where they will face Mali, runners-up in Group A. Tanzania, meanwhile, progressed thanks to scoring one goal more than Angola in the third-place rankings. Their reward is a daunting tie against either Morocco or Egypt, two of the tournament favourites.
