PARIS – Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha scored a hat-trick in a 5-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, handing Thomas Frank’s side a second straight defeat despite a spirited performance that twice saw the visitors take the lead.
Tottenham arrived in the French capital looking for a reaction after Sunday’s 4-1 loss to Arsenal, and went ahead through Richarlison in the first half before PSG loanee Randal Kolo Muani struck against his parent club. Vitinha levelled with a long-range strike and later completed his treble from the penalty spot to end Spurs’ unbeaten Champions League run and leave them 15th after five group-phase fixtures.
Frank made several changes in response to growing scrutiny following the derby defeat, recalling youngsters Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr. The approach initially brought greater energy, and Bergvall and Gray combined well in the opening exchanges, only for Marquinhos—making his 500th PSG appearance—to intervene.
PSG created the clearer early chances, with Fabián Ruiz and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia testing goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, but it was Spurs who struck first. Bergvall’s flick released Gray, who crossed for Kolo Muani to set up Richarlison for a close-range header after 35 minutes.
Vitinha equalised just before the break with a powerful drive from distance, but Tottenham regained the lead shortly after half-time when Kolo Muani finished from a loose ball following a set piece.
PSG responded with three goals in 13 minutes. Vitinha curled in his second before Ruiz and defender William Pacho capitalised on mistakes in Tottenham’s defensive third. Kolo Muani pulled one back late on, but a handball from Cristian Romero allowed Vitinha to convert a penalty and complete his hat-trick.
The match ended with Lucas Hernández sent off, but PSG closed out the win to tighten their grip on qualification, while Spurs’ aggressive approach and youthful selection offered positives despite the defensive issues.
The result strengthens PSG’s push for the knockout stage and further highlights Vitinha’s growing influence in Luis Enrique’s system, while Tottenham’s defeat raises fresh questions over consistency and tactical balance as they navigate a congested schedule.
