The Premier League title race remains finely balanced, but Manchester City currently hold top spot ahead of Arsenal despite both sides being level on points late in the 2025-26 season.
With 33 matches played, the two teams are locked on 70 points and share identical records in terms of wins, draws and defeats. The difference at the top comes down to the league’s tie breaking criteria.
In the Premier League, standings are first determined by total points. If teams are level, the next deciding factor is goal difference, calculated by subtracting goals conceded from goals scored. If that is also equal, total goals scored becomes the next measure.
At present, both City and Arsenal have the same goal difference of +37. However, City have scored more goals overall, with 66 compared to Arsenal’s 63, giving them the edge in the standings.
That margin, while small, highlights the importance of attacking output in a tight title race. Every goal scored or conceded can directly influence league position, particularly when teams are separated by such fine margins.
The system used in England differs from other major European leagues. In La Liga, teams level on points are separated first by head to head results, placing greater emphasis on direct encounters.
A similar approach applies in Serie A, where head to head records are also key, and in rare cases a playoff match can be used if teams remain tied at the top after all criteria are applied.
With several matches still to play, the title race in England remains open. For now, Manchester City’s superior goal tally keeps them ahead, but the outcome could yet shift as the season reaches its conclusion.
