Real Betis 0–2 Atletico Madrid: Baena Scores First Goal as Simeone’s Team Take First Away Win

Guiliano Simeone and Alex Baena both found the net as Atletico Madrid claimed a solid 2–0 victory over Real Betis in Monday’s LaLiga clash.

Atletico looked confident and clinical at the Estadio Benito Villamarín, taking control early and never really letting Betis come back into the game. Alex Baena also scored his first goal for the club in the win.

It took only three minutes for Atletico to strike. Guiliano Simeone opened the scoring after a clever setup from Koke, smashing a low drive into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

The visitors stayed on top for most of the first half. Nico Gonzalez forced a couple good saves from Pau Lopez, while Julián Álvarez came close with a shot that went just wide on the counterattack midway through the half.

Betis almost equalized through Ricardo Rodríguez, who unleashed a powerful strike from distance that missed the post by inches.

Right before halftime, Baena made it 2–0 with a beautiful curling shot from the left side after some good buildup play. Just a few moments earlier, Betis had appealed for a handball in the box, but the referee waved it away.

The home side tried to react after the break, with Giovanni Lo Celso and Abde Ezzalzouli both testing Jan Oblak, but Diego Simeone’s men stayed organized and calm to secure their first away win of the LaLiga season.

Data Debrief: Simeone’s Men Stay Unbeaten

Guiliano Simeone has now been involved in four goals in his last five LaLiga games (one goal, three assists) — matching his total from the previous 18 matches. His strike after just 2 minutes and 59 seconds is Atletico’s fastest league goal so far this season.

Despite the 2–0 scoreline, Betis actually created 1.10 expected goals (xG) compared to Atletico’s 0.64, showing that the hosts maybe deserved a little more from the game.

This result extends Atletico’s unbeaten run to nine league matches, their longest since a stretch of 11 from May to October last year.

Manager Diego Simeone also reached another milestone — he has now won 19 LaLiga games against Real Betis, with only Getafe (20 wins) suffering more defeats to the Argentine coach.
