Pep Guardiola said Rodri will not be risked in Manchester City’s FA Cup semi-final against Southampton as the midfielder continues his recovery from a groin injury.
Rodri was forced off late in City’s 2-1 Premier League win over Arsenal last weekend and missed the midweek victory against Burnley, a result that lifted City to the top of the table.
With the club chasing another league title, Guardiola said he would not take unnecessary risks with the 29-year-old, who has dealt with multiple injury issues in recent seasons.
“Rodri is improving, he is better,” Guardiola told reporters. “But we have to be careful. If we take a risk and he gets injured again, we could lose him for several matches.”
The Spain international is now targeting a possible return for City’s Premier League trip to Everton on May 4, although Guardiola said no final decision has been made.
City are aiming to reach a fourth consecutive FA Cup final, but face a confident Southampton side that has impressed during their run in the competition.
Guardiola highlighted Southampton’s recent performances, including wins over Fulham and Arsenal, as evidence of the challenge ahead.
“They are in very good form and playing with confidence,” he said. “We respect them a lot, but for us this is a big chance to reach another final.”
The semi-final at Wembley Stadium comes at a crucial stage of the season, with City balancing their FA Cup ambitions alongside a tight Premier League title race.
