Jose Mourinho is set for a sensational return to Real Madrid after the election campaign of club president Florentino Perez announced the Portuguese coach as its managerial choice should Perez secure re-election.
The announcement was made through social media in a move that attracted immediate attention across Spanish football. The campaign released a short video featuring Mourinho, accompanied by the message: “MOUre history to be made.”
The video opened with the words, “While they talk and talk and talk on TV,” before Mourinho appeared on screen and simply responded: “Yes.”
The timing of the announcement appeared significant, arriving as presidential rival Enrique Riquelme was making a television appearance on the popular Spanish programme “El Hormiguero”.
After weeks of speculation surrounding the future direction of the club, Perez’s campaign has now publicly identified Mourinho as the man it wants to lead Real Madrid if the current president remains in office.
Mourinho is no stranger to the Santiago Bernabeu. The Portuguese coach managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, overseeing one of the club’s most successful domestic periods in recent history.
During his three-year spell, Mourinho guided Real Madrid to the 2011-12 La Liga title, a campaign widely remembered as the “League of Records” after the club set several scoring and points milestones. He also won the Copa del Rey in 2011 and the Spanish Super Cup in 2012.
The former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Manchester United manager recently opted not to continue with Benfica, further fuelling speculation about his next move.
If Perez wins re-election, Mourinho could be handed the task of leading Real Madrid into a new era, more than a decade after his first spell with the Spanish giants came to an end.
