Former AFC Bournemouth midfielder Matt Ritchie has been appointed as the club’s new technical director after announcing his retirement from professional football.
The 36-year-old returns to the Premier League club following the end of his playing career, with League One side Reading confirming that Ritchie had agreed to terminate his contract early to take up the new position.
Ritchie begins a new chapter at a club where he enjoyed some of the most memorable moments of his career, having played a key role in Bournemouth’s rise through the English football pyramid.
“AFC Bournemouth has always meant a huge amount to me, so to return in this capacity is incredibly special,” Ritchie said.

“I’ve spent a long time preparing for life after playing, learning from experienced people across football and developing my understanding of the technical and strategic side of the game.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity and I can’t wait to start working with the staff, players and ownership group as we continue building for the future.”
Ritchie made 142 appearances for Bournemouth across two spells, scoring 31 goals and establishing himself as a fan favourite through his energy, leadership and attacking contributions.
The former Scotland international also enjoyed successful spells with Newcastle United and Reading FC during a professional career that spanned nearly two decades.
His appointment signals Bournemouth’s commitment to strengthening their football operations with individuals who possess both playing experience and a deep understanding of the club’s culture and long-term ambitions.
Ritchie now steps into a senior off-field role as Bournemouth continue planning for the future both on and off the pitch.
