Brazil will enter the FIFA World Cup 2026 as the nation with the most matches played in tournament history, but their long-standing record could come under threat if Germany make a deep run in the competition.
The five-time world champions have appeared in 114 World Cup matches, more than any other country since the tournament began in 1930. Their remarkable record reflects decades of success on football’s biggest stage, where Brazil have consistently been among the strongest contenders.
Known worldwide for their attacking style and legendary players such as Pele, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Neymar, Brazil remain the most successful team in World Cup history, having lifted the trophy five times.
However, Germany are closing in on another major World Cup milestone. The four-time champions have played 112 matches at the tournament, just two fewer than Brazil. That total includes appearances by both West Germany and the unified German national team.
With both nations expected to progress beyond the group stage at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, Germany could overtake Brazil if Julian Nagelsmann’s side advance deep into the knockout rounds while the South Americans suffer an early exit.
While the battle for first place remains open, Argentina are firmly established in third position. The reigning world champions have played 88 World Cup matches and remain well behind the top two nations.
Italy continue to hold fourth place on the all-time list despite failing to qualify for the 2026 tournament. The four-time champions have made 83 World Cup appearances, but their absence means that figure will remain unchanged for another four years.
The Italians have endured a difficult period since winning the World Cup in 2006. They exited at the group stage in both 2010 and 2014 before failing to qualify for the 2018, 2022 and 2026 tournaments.
England sit fifth with 74 World Cup appearances. Even if the Three Lions reach the final of the 2026 tournament, they would still fall short of Italy’s total.
France are close behind England with 73 World Cup matches. Like England, the 2018 champions could improve their standing but are unable to catch Italy during the upcoming competition.
As the countdown to World Cup 2026 continues, Brazil remain the benchmark nation in terms of tournament appearances. Yet with Germany within touching distance, another historic World Cup record could soon be up for grabs.
