Como 9-1 Lens: Historic Win as Liverpool Lose to Fenerbahce

Como 9-1 Lens was the shock result of the Champions League on Wednesday night. Como won 9-1 away at Lens in France. The win equalled the biggest winning margin in the competition’s history.

The Como 9-1 Lens result came on the same night Liverpool lost their perfect record. Liverpool fell 3-2 to Fenerbahce in Turkey. Meanwhile, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Manchester City all won away from home.

Como, coached by Cesc Fabregas, made history in style. They are now fourth in the overall standings after four games, with nine points. That is three points behind Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, and one point behind Arsenal.

How Como Made History in the Como 9-1 Lens Win

Como started fast and never slowed down. Greek striker Anastasios Douvikas scored the first two goals. After that, Argentine star Nico Paz made it 3-0 at half-time. The visitors were in full control at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.

The second half brought more goals. Lucas Da Cunha and Marc-Oliver Kempf both scored early after the break. Douvikas then completed his hat-trick to make it 6-0. Mattia Liberali added a seventh goal soon after.

Lens did pull one back through Ruben Aguilar, who scored with a fine volley. However, Como hit back again. Martin Baturina and Matteo Papaccioli scored late goals to complete the 9-1 win.

The margin matters in Champions League history. Como became only the third team since the modern Champions League began in 1992 to win a game by eight goals. Liverpool beat Besiktas 8-0 in 2007. Real Madrid beat Malmo 8-0 in 2015. Como are also only the second team to score nine in a game, after Bayern Munich beat Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 in 2024.

Como had already beaten Manchester United 4-1 two weeks earlier. This win shows their form is real. In addition, it puts them in a strong spot for the knockout stage.

Liverpool Lose Perfect Record to Fenerbahce

Liverpool went to Istanbul with three wins from three games in Europe. We already covered the Fenerbahce result in full in our earlier report – see our Fenerbahce Stun Liverpool 3-2 post – so this article focuses on Como’s historic win, with the Liverpool result as context only. They had beaten Atletico Madrid, LASK, and Villarreal. However, Fenerbahce ended that run with a 3-2 win on Wednesday.

Trey Nyoni, 19, gave Liverpool the lead with his first senior goal. Fenerbahce then equalised through a deflected Mason Greenwood free-kick. Alexander Isak headed Liverpool back in front on 69 minutes. After that, Archie Brown scored a quick leveller for the home side. Vedat Muriqi then won the game for Fenerbahce.

Fenerbahce came into the match sixth in the Turkish Super Lig. They had lost 6-0 at Aston Villa earlier this season. They also had ex-Liverpool player Dirk Kuyt in charge on an interim basis. As a result, the win was a surprise.

“I think we’ve put ourselves in good positions, so that today if we lose this game it’s not a chaos situation,” Isak said. “We just need to get back to winning ways, and if we win the next game, we are back to a really good position.”

Liverpool had also lost to Arsenal in the Premier League at the weekend. The team will want a quick response in their next league and European games.

Real Madrid, Arsenal and Man City Win Again

Real Madrid kept their perfect record with another late comeback. They fought back to beat AEK Athens 3-2 in Greece. Aboubakary Koita gave the hosts an early lead. Jude Bellingham then levelled with a clever back-heel.

Stavros Pilios put AEK back in front on 75 minutes. However, Kylian Mbappe levelled again with his 16th goal in all competitions this season. Federico Valverde then smashed in a stoppage-time winner. Koita was sent off at the end.

Arsenal won 2-1 at Slavia Prague. Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres scored first-half goals. Wiktor Nowak scored a late goal for the home side. Mikel Arteta praised the away win after the match.

“We have to value the fact that it’s very difficult to win away from home. We’ve done it against a really tough opponent, as we expected,” Arteta said.

Manchester City also won 3-2 away at RB Leipzig. Erling Haaland scored a late winner. City had led twice, first through a Castello Lukeba own goal and then through Enzo Fernandez. Leipzig equalised twice through Ridle Baku and Antonio Nusa. City are now one of nine teams with nine points.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund beat Real Betis 2-1, thanks to a winner from Greek teenager Konstantinos Karetsas. Club Brugge beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1. FC Porto beat Napoli 4-1 in Portugal. Viking Stavanger also won 4-1 against Sabah of Azerbaijan.

What the Como 9-1 Lens Result Means for the Table

The league phase now has four games played. Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid lead the table. Arsenal are close behind. Como sit fourth with nine points. That is a strong place after four matches.

The top eight teams go straight to the round of 16. Teams in ninth to 24th place go into play-offs. With four games left, every point matters. Como’s huge goal difference could also help if teams finish level on points.

For Lens, the Como 9-1 Lens night was painful. They conceded nine goals at home. They must now regroup quickly. A heavy defeat can hurt confidence, but the league phase still offers a path back.
