Ex-Everton, Real Madrid wing Drenthe suffers stroke
Former Dutch international Royston Drenthe, who played for clubs including Real Madrid and Everton, is recovering after suffering a stroke, local media reported on Monday.
The 37-year-old was hospitalized in the Netherlands last week following what doctors confirmed to be a mild stroke. Drenthe later shared an update on social media, assuring supporters that his condition had stabilized and he was focused on recovery.
“Things are going better now, but it was a frightening experience,” Drenthe said in an interview with Dutch outlet AD. “I’m taking it step by step and grateful for the support I’ve received.”
Drenthe rose to prominence as a teenager with Feyenoord before joining Real Madrid in 2007 for a reported €14 million following his breakout performances at the UEFA Under-21 Championship. Known for his explosive pace and direct style, the winger made 65 appearances for the Spanish giants before loan spells at Hercules and Everton.
After leaving Madrid, Drenthe’s career included stints in Russia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates before eventually retiring from professional football in 2022. In recent years, he had turned his attention to business and entertainment ventures in his hometown of Rotterdam.
Drenthe’s health scare has prompted an outpouring of support from fans and former teammates across Europe. The Dutchman remains under observation but is expected to make a full recovery.
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the physical toll elite football can take, even years after retirement.
