FSV Mainz 05 have confirmed that defender Danny da Costa has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the Bundesliga club until 2027.
The new deal was activated after Mainz secured their Bundesliga status with an away victory over FC St. Pauli, triggering an automatic extension clause in the 32-year-old’s contract.
Da Costa has become an important figure for Mainz since establishing himself as a regular starter during the 2022-23 season. His versatility has been a key asset, with the defender capable of playing both in a back three and as a right wing back.
This season, he featured in 44 of Mainz’s 47 competitive matches, underlining his importance to the squad during a demanding campaign.
The German defender initially joined Mainz on loan in 2021 before completing a permanent move from Eintracht Frankfurt the following year.
Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert praised Da Costa’s consistency and leadership after the contract announcement.
“Danny is reliability personified,” Bungert said in a club statement. “To perform consistently throughout the season and be available in almost every game is a remarkable achievement.
“We are very pleased that we can continue to rely on his calmness, experience and stability at Mainz.”
Da Costa’s extension provides continuity for Mainz as the club begins planning for the 2026-27 Bundesliga campaign following another successful fight to remain in Germany’s top flight.
