Mbappé left wanting despite hat trick for Madrid
Kylian Mbappé delivered a clinical attacking display, netting a hat-trick as Real Madrid secured a 5-0 victory against Kairat Almaty in their Champions League group stage match on Tuesday. The France international converted an initial penalty before scoring twice more in open play, helping Madrid maintain their perfect start to the campaign with two wins from two matches.
Mbappé opened the scoring in the first half by calmly converting a spot-kick after a slow start for Madrid and doubled his tally shortly after half-time, displaying sharp composure and lethal finishing. He completed his treble in the 73rd minute, adding to goals from Eduardo Camavinga and Brahim Diaz, underscoring Madrid’s dominance in the fixture.
Despite his three goals, Mbappé expressed a desire for greater output, reflecting a professional drive for higher standards. “A player like me, when I have five chances I should score five goals,” he told Movistar. “Today, I scored three, and that’s good, but I could have scored more. I’ll keep working to be more clinical in front of goal.”
Madrid coach Xabi Alonso echoed the sentiment on efficiency, noting, “In this format, when you have the chance to score goals, you can’t fail to do it. We could have scored more, but it’s mission accomplished for today.”
The win provided a timely response to Madrid’s previous setback, a 5-2 defeat in the fiercely contested Madrid derby against Atletico Madrid just days earlier. Mbappé acknowledged the significance of that loss as motivation but kept focus on the distinct nature of different competitions. “You should never forget, we can’t forget what happened this weekend,” he said. “This is another competition, but we have to keep thinking about what happened, and work to be better so as not to experience another night like that.”
Mbappé also praised goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, whose precise long ball played a pivotal role in setting up one of the forward’s goals. “I don’t know if he meant to do it, but it’s a great pass. He made 80% of the goal and I made the other 20%,” Mbappé remarked.
This performance reinforces Mbappé’s value as a prolific and technically adept striker, key to Madrid’s ambitions in Europe this season. His sharp decision-making, clinical finishing, and ability to capitalize on pressing resistance underscore his importance to coach Alonso’s tactical setup, positioning him as a central figure in the club’s offensive strategy moving forward.
