Hosts Mexico opened the FIFA World Cup 2026 in style with a commanding 2-0 win over South Africa at a packed Estadio Azteca, delivering a strong statement in front of a roaring home crowd.
Goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez secured all three points for Javier Aguirre’s side, who controlled the match from the opening minutes and rarely looked threatened.
Mexico started on the front foot, pushing South Africa deep with early pressure. Raúl Jiménez tested the goalkeeper inside four minutes with a powerful strike, setting the tone for a dominant opening spell.
The breakthrough arrived in the ninth minute after a defensive mistake from South Africa inside their own box. Quiñones reacted quickest to a loose ball and finished calmly, sparking huge celebrations inside the stadium and giving Mexico an early lead they never relinquished.
South Africa struggled to respond and spent long periods defending under pressure. Their best first-half chance came from a set piece, but the header failed to trouble the Mexican defence.
Mexico continued to create chances before the break, with Jiménez denied again and Quiñones striking the post as the hosts pushed for a second goal.
The match swung further in Mexico’s favour early in the second half when South Africa were reduced to 10 men after a straight red card for a professional foul on Brian Gutiérrez.
With the numerical advantage, Mexico increased control and eventually doubled their lead in the 67th minute. A precise cross was met by Jiménez, who headed home to make it 2-0 and effectively seal the result.
Late substitutions allowed Aguirre to give tournament minutes to younger players, including 17-year-old Gilberto Mora, who was introduced to loud applause from the home fans.
South Africa’s frustration grew in the closing stages as they finished the match with further disciplinary setbacks, while Mexico also saw a late red card, although the result was already beyond doubt.
The victory gives Mexico a perfect start to their World Cup campaign and early control of Group A, while South Africa will need a quick response in their next fixture against the Czech Republic.
