José Mourinho has reportedly agreed to return as head coach of Real Madrid, with the Portuguese manager set to sign a three year contract after reaching an agreement with the club last week.
According to reports, Mourinho is expected to take charge until June 2029 as Madrid prepare for a new era following a disappointing season that ended without major silverware.
An official announcement, however, is unlikely before early June due to the club’s presidential election. Current president Florentino Pérez is facing a challenge from businessman Enrique Riquelme, with voting scheduled for June 7.
The ongoing election process has delayed several key decisions at the club, including confirmation of Mourinho’s appointment.
Benfica, where Mourinho is currently in charge, are already preparing for his expected departure. Reports suggest the Portuguese side have accepted his intention to leave and return to Madrid, although discussions over his release terms are still continuing.
The club have also reportedly begun assessing possible replacements in anticipation of Mourinho’s exit.
Mourinho’s previous spell at Real Madrid, combined with his reputation for restoring discipline and competitiveness, is believed to have played a major role in the decision to bring him back.
Club officials reportedly see the 63 year old as the ideal figure to rebuild the squad and return Madrid to the top of both Spanish and European football.
During his earlier time at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Mourinho won a LaLiga title, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup, while helping establish one of the club’s most competitive modern eras.
