Spain’s Rodri was named the official Golden Ball winner as the best player of the 2026 World Cup, but a statistical analysis published by Sky Sports rated Lionel Messi as the tournament’s top individual performer, ahead of Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham.
Rodri received football’s traditional individual honor after helping Spain beat Argentina in the final, with teammates Pau Cubarsi and Unai Simon separately picking up the Young Player and Golden Glove awards.
What the data shows
Sky Sports uses a system it calls Power Rankings, which the outlet says analyzes more than 40 data points per player across each match to produce a performance rating out of 100. According to that model, Messi, Mbappe and Bellingham ranked as the tournament’s top three performers, in that order. Rodri placed 18th overall, and only seventh among his own Spain squad by the same measure.
The analysis found Rodri finished in the top 10 of 13 out of 43 statistical categories tracked across the tournament, compared with 18 apiece for Messi and Mbappe. Rodri did lead the tournament in total touches and registered the most tackles of any player, reflecting his heavy defensive and possession-based involvement for Spain.
Sky Sports’ published Power Rankings leaderboard for the tournament was as follows:
| Rank | Player | Team | Total pts. | Overall rating |
| 1 | Lionel Messi | Argentina | 31,151 | 100.00 |
| 2 | Kylian Mbappe | France | 28,172 | 97.69 |
| 3 | Jude Bellingham | England | 21,086 | 91.54 |
| 4 | Ousmane Dembele | France | 20,452 | 90.94 |
| 5 | Unai Simon | Spain | 17,990 | 88.48 |
| 6 | Erling Haaland | Norway | 17,914 | 88.40 |
| 7 | Pedro Porro | Spain | 15,392 | 85.65 |
| 8 | Mikel Oyarzabal | Spain | 14,924 | 85.11 |
| 9 | Aymeric Laporte | Spain | 13,706 | 83.66 |
| 10 | Pau Cubarsi | Spain | 13,386 | 83.27 |
Rodri does not appear in the top 10 of that overall leaderboard, consistent with his 18th-place ranking cited by Sky Sports. The same data set also breaks down each of the top performers’ individual match-by-match ratings across the tournament:
| Rank | Player | Match 1 | Match 2 | Match 3 | Match 4 | Match 5 | Match 6 | Match 7 | Match 8 |
| 1 | Lionel Messi | 100 | 97 | 96 | 96 | 96 | 95 | 95 | 70 |
| 2 | Kylian Mbappe | 98 | 98 | 91 | 97 | 86 | 95 | 67 | 97 |
| 3 | Jude Bellingham | 95 | 71 | 97 | 73 | 97 | 97 | 71 | 92 |
| 4 | Ousmane Dembele | 72 | 96 | 99 | 81 | 74 | 96 | 71 | 90 |
| 5 | Unai Simon | 85 | 93 | 92 | 89 | 92 | 73 | 96 | 91 |
| 6 | Erling Haaland | 97 | 97 | NA | 94 | 98 | 68 | NA | NA |
| 7 | Pedro Porro | NA | 92 | NA | 97 | 87 | 78 | 95 | 88 |
| 8 | Mikel Oyarzabal | 72 | 97 | 71 | 97 | 74 | 78 | 80 | 74 |
| 9 | Aymeric Laporte | 83 | 95 | 92 | 86 | 77 | 73 | 83 | 80 |
Messi’s 100.00 rating in his opening match, corresponding to his hat-trick against Algeria, stands as the single highest individual match score in the data set, while his rating dipped to 70 by the eighth and final match, coinciding with Argentina’s extra-time defeat in the final.
The same data highlighted Messi’s hat-trick in Argentina’s opening match against Algeria as the single best individual performance of the tournament by the model’s measure. Mbappe, meanwhile, won the World Cup Golden Boot outright as the tournament’s leading scorer, finishing ahead of Messi in that separate award category.
A recurring debate
Sky Sports football journalist Callum Bishop wrote that the gap between the data and the Golden Ball result raises the possibility that the award recognized the tournament’s best team as much as its best individual player. On air, Sky Sports pundit Jay Bothroyd argued that Messi’s qualities should have been enough to earn him the honor ahead of Rodri.
The debate echoes similar discussion that followed Rodri’s Ballon d’Or win in 2024, when his individual recognition amid a stacked field of attacking talent also divided opinion among pundits and fans.
Rodri’s Golden Ball success mirrors his role in Spain’s earlier European Championship triumph, with the Manchester City midfielder again credited as a stabilizing presence behind a young Spanish squad built around Cubarsi, Lamine Yamal and Simon. Sky Sports’ analysis noted that while Rodri’s underlying numbers were strong across a range of categories, they did not match the peak output logged by Messi or Mbappe over the course of the tournament.
Neither FIFA nor Rodri has publicly responded to the specific comparison drawn by Sky Sports’ data model. The Golden Ball remains Rodri’s official recognition as the tournament’s best player, a result that stands independently of any outlet’s statistical rankings.
