Xavi Hernandez has disclosed that FC Barcelona explored high profile moves to bring back Lionel Messi and Neymar during his time in charge, but financial constraints prevented both deals.
Speaking in an interview, Xavi said Barcelona came close to reuniting with the two former stars, though the club’s economic situation made the transfers impossible to complete.
“The opportunity was there,” Xavi said regarding Neymar. “But the financial reality made it very difficult. The wage structure we inherited limited what we could do in the market.”
Xavi, who led Barcelona between 2021 and 2024, oversaw a period that included a LaLiga title in the 2022-23 season but ended with a difficult final campaign.
He described Neymar as one of the most naturally gifted players he has worked with, placing him just behind Messi in terms of ability.
“What he showed early on was very close to Messi’s level,” Xavi said. “I have not seen many players reach that standard.”
On Messi, Xavi confirmed that serious discussions took place over a potential return to the club, but the move was ultimately blocked.
“We worked on it for months and everything was in place,” he said. “But the final decision was not approved.”
Barcelona president Joan Laporta reportedly opted against completing the deal despite advanced negotiations.

Xavi added that he also looked at bringing back other former players during his tenure, but the club’s financial limits remained a constant obstacle.
He also highlighted the emergence of Lamine Yamal as one of the positives from his time in charge, backing the teenager to become one of the leading players in world football.
“He has the talent to reach the very top,” Xavi said. “What comes next depends on his mentality and how far he wants to go.”
Barcelona continue to rebuild both on and off the pitch, with their financial strategy still playing a key role in shaping transfer decisions.
