Chelsea weighing up big-money move for Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez
Chelsea are reportedly considering a major move for Barcelona youngster Fermín López before the transfer window shuts, according to The Athletic.
The Blues have already spoken to López’s camp to check if he would be open to leaving Camp Nou for Stamford Bridge. Barcelona, who continue to battle financial problems, could benefit from a sale, while Chelsea see the 22-year-old as a key piece for Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
Chelsea’s interest
The report claims Chelsea have made concrete contact and even offered Fermín an important role in the team. Initially, he was given 48 hours to make a decision, though that time frame is now shorter as the deadline approaches.
If López gives the green light, Chelsea are ready to table a formal bid. Spanish outlet Sport suggests the London club could put forward around €50 million. That amount would allow Barça to register new arrivals without selling other players like Oriol Romeu or Héctor Fort.
Barcelona’s stance
Fermín is seen as one of Barça’s brightest young midfielders. Last season, he registered 8 goals and 9 assists in 46 games. He signed a new deal in October 2024, keeping him at the club until 2029 with a higher release clause.
However, Barça’s tight finances and stiff competition for minutes could push both player and club to consider a move. Despite starting the La Liga opener against Mallorca, López was benched for the next game against Levante. Cameras even caught him in a long chat with Hansi Flick on the sidelines, with the coach seemingly offering reassurance.
What’s next?
Barcelona face Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, just a day before the transfer deadline. It remains unclear whether Fermín will be part of the squad or if Chelsea’s late push will drag this transfer saga into the final hours.
