Liverpool, Chelsea, and Man United All Lose in Dramatic Saturday Fixtures
It were a right bad day for the big clubs in the Premier League on Saturday, with Liverpool, Manchester United, and Chelsea all suffering defeats in matches what had plenty of late drama.
The champions Liverpool lost their first points of the season, going down 2-1 to Crystal Palace with a winner in the 97th minute. Over at Brentford, Manchester United were beaten 3-1, and Chelsea, who had a man sent off, lost 3-1 at home to Brighton with two of the goals coming in stoppage time.
Meanwhile, Manchester City had no such troubles, thrashing Burnley 5-1 thanks to two own goals from the same Burnley defender and a late brace from Erling Haaland.
Liverpool’s First Loss Comes Late
Palace took an early lead at Selhurst Park when Ismaila Sarr scored from a set-piece in the ninth minute. Liverpool’s keeper Alisson had to make several saves to keep them in it, and they looked to have nicked a point when Federico Chiesa equalised late on. But then substitute Eddie Nketiah won it for Palace deep into added time, with VAR confirming the goal were good.
City Ease Past Burnley
Burnley’s Maxime Esteve had a nightmare, scoring two own goals in the same game, which ain’t happened too often in the Premier League. Even after Jaidon Anthony made it 1-1, City pulled away. Matheus Nunes scored, then Esteve put another in his own net, before Haaland finished it off with two late goals.
United Well Beaten at Brentford
It were a tough return to Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo, now in a United shirt, as his old club raced into a 2-0 lead inside 20 minutes. Igor Thiago scored both, first after beating the offside trap and then from a rebound. United got one back through Benjamin Sesko, but Bruno Fernandes had a penalty saved and Mathias Jensen sealed it with a rocket in stoppage time. United boss Ruben Amorim said his side were “really confused” and didn’t control the game.
Chelsea’s Red Card Costly Again
For the second league game in a row, Chelsea had a player sent off. This time it were Trevoh Chalobah seeing red for a professional foul. Even though Enzo Fernandez had given them the lead, going down to ten men changed everything. Danny Welbeck equalised for Brighton, and then they scored twice in added time through Maxim De Cuyper and Welbeck again to win it.
In the other matches, Leeds were held 2-2 by Bournemouth after a 93rd-minute equaliser from young Eli Junior Kroupi. Tottenham also left it late, with Joao Palhinha scoring in the 94th minute to grab a 1-1 draw with Wolves, who are still looking for their first win. Sunderland beat Nottingham Forest 1-0, leaving Forest’s new manager Ange Postecoglou still without a win.
