Real Madrid say ‘we’re united’ amid outside noise
MADRID – Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said Wednesday’s 4-3 Champions League victory over Olympiacos was a turning point for the club after a run of three matches without a win raised questions over form and team cohesion.
Kylian Mbappé scored four goals, including a rapid seven-minute hat trick, and Vinícius Júnior contributed two assists as Madrid moved to 12 points, strengthening their position among the top eight sides in the competition.
Madrid entered the match in Greece under scrutiny following a defeat to Liverpool and successive draws with Rayo Vallecano and Elche. The run led to criticism of Alonso’s tactical approach and suggestions of strained relationships with several senior players.
“Today it was important to change the dynamic,” Alonso told Spanish broadcaster Movistar. “It was important in terms of qualification, and because of the moment we’re in. We’re all united. We know it will be a long and demanding season.”
Reports of tension between Alonso and Vinícius had intensified after the Brazilian was benched several times this season and showed frustration when substituted during last month’s El Clásico. Alonso dismissed concerns and praised the forward’s contribution, adding that a disallowed goal reflected exactly the type of movement planned for him.
Alonso also highlighted Mbappé’s influence beyond his goalscoring. “His personality and leadership are fundamental,” he said. “The intangible things he brings help make a team.”
Mbappé, now leading the scoring charts in both LaLiga and the Champions League, acknowledged the pressure surrounding the club. “People talk when you play for Real Madrid,” he said. “We have to protect each other – the players, the coach, the staff. We’re together.”
The result eased immediate pressure on Alonso and reinforced Madrid’s attacking strength, with Mbappé and Vinícius again central to their European ambitions. The win also provided momentum ahead of a demanding stretch of fixtures as Madrid aim to remain competitive on multiple fronts this season.
