Porto booked their place in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals with a 2–0 win over VfB Stuttgart at the Estádio do Dragão, sealing a 4–1 aggregate triumph. The result not only extended their fine run of form against German opposition — five straight victories — but also showcased the brilliance of captain Diogo Costa, whose inspired performance between the posts kept Stuttgart at bay.
Stuttgart Start Brightly
Needing goals to level the tie, Stuttgart came out aggressively. Angelo Stiller’s set-pieces caused early problems, with Costa forced to tip Jeff Chabot’s header over the bar. Chris Führich then fired over, while Deniz Undav bent a shot wide after being set up by Führich. The visitors’ wastefulness proved costly.
Against the run of play, Porto struck in the 21st minute. Borja Sainz’s persistence paid off when a tackle ricocheted kindly into William Gomes’ path, and the midfielder tapped home to double Porto’s aggregate lead.
Costa Keeps Porto Ahead
Despite the cushion, Porto had to dig deep. Three yellow cards inside half an hour showed the intensity of the battle. Yet they still threatened, with Sainz breaking forward to set up Zaidu Sanusi, whose shot was saved.
Costa, however, was the difference. The Dragões captain produced a string of superb stops, tipping Bilal El Khannouss’ strike wide and clawing away a curling effort from Führich that looked destined for the top corner. Sainz and Rodrigo Mora both went close at the other end, but Porto’s advantage remained slim heading into the break.
Relentless Stuttgart Pressure
The second half began with Stuttgart again on the front foot. Undav’s effort was brilliantly tipped wide by Costa, while Maximilian Mittelstädt’s tame shot rolled past the post. Undav then flicked the ball over Costa, but it drifted wide, epitomizing Stuttgart’s inability to convert pressure into goals.
Porto, though under siege, continued to look dangerous on the counter. Their resilience was rewarded in the 72nd minute. Victor Froholdt lost possession to Stiller but immediately won it back, before unleashing a thunderous strike into the top corner. It was a devastating blow that effectively ended Stuttgart’s hopes.
Stuttgart’s Collapse
Things unraveled further for the visitors when Nikolas Nartey, on the pitch for just 15 minutes, picked up two yellow cards in quick succession and was sent off. Reduced to ten men, Stuttgart’s challenge faded completely.
Porto pressed for more but were content to see out the game with a clean sheet. The victory marked their 11th win in 12 home matches across all competitions, underlining their formidable record at the Dragão.
Looking Ahead
For Porto, the triumph carries extra significance. It’s their first Europa League quarter-final appearance since the 2013/14 season, and they will now face Nottingham Forest in a tie that promises intrigue. Costa’s heroics, Froholdt’s strike, and Gomes’ opportunism highlighted the balance in Sérgio Conceição’s side — a mix of defensive steel and attacking flair.
Stuttgart, meanwhile, exit the competition with regrets. Despite creating chances, their lack of composure in front of goal proved decisive. With just one win in their last five away fixtures, their European campaign ends in disappointment.
