Arsenal produced a commanding display to defeat Manchester City 3-0 and lift the 2026 FA Community Shield on Sunday, making an emphatic statement before the new Premier League campaign begins. Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard scored as Mikel Arteta’s side overwhelmed City at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.
The traditional curtain-raiser was effectively decided by Arsenal’s explosive start. Calafiori found the net after just 23 seconds, finishing calmly after being released by Myles Lewis-Skelly, with the goal becoming the earliest scored in the Community Shield for 58 years.
Playing away from Wembley because of a scheduling conflict, Arsenal looked sharper throughout and controlled possession against a City side beginning a new era under Enzo Maresca. The Italian manager’s first competitive match in charge offered little encouragement as his team struggled to create sustained attacking pressure.
City gradually settled after the early setback, but David Raya denied Phil Foden with a full-length save before also frustrating Erling Haaland during the first half. Arsenal’s defensive organisation prevented Haaland from finding space behind the back line, limiting the Norwegian to few meaningful opportunities.
Arsenal doubled their advantage before the interval when Odegaard delivered a precise cross to the far post, where new signing Christos Tzolis headed the ball back across goal. Havertz rose to meet it, and Gianluigi Donnarumma could only help the header over his own line as Arsenal took complete control.
Any hopes of a City comeback disappeared three minutes after halftime. Tzolis collected possession on the left and slipped Odegaard into the penalty area, where the Arsenal captain used an intelligent first touch to wrong-foot Josko Gvardiol before finishing beyond Donnarumma for 3-0.
The performance highlighted Arsenal’s tactical cohesion as Lewis-Skelly impressed in midfield and Bruno Guimaraes added authority alongside him. Tzolis, one of the club’s summer arrivals, contributed two assists and provided constant attacking width, underlining the depth Arteta has added to his title-winning squad.
For Manchester City, the defeat exposed the challenges facing Maresca following Pep Guardiola’s departure. City appeared short of rhythm after a limited preseason schedule, while new goalkeeper Donnarumma endured an uncomfortable debut marked by uncertainty on crosses and costly positioning.
Speaking after the final whistle, Odegaard said Arsenal had shown they were “ready” for another demanding season and insisted the club’s ambition extends beyond domestic honours as they pursue the UEFA Champions League after last season’s near miss.
Arsenal now turn their attention to Friday’s Premier League opener against Coventry City, while Manchester City begin their league campaign against Bournemouth knowing significant improvement will be required before the season gathers momentum.
