Barcelona open to Ferran Torres sale as €8m clause complicates renewal

Barcelona are reportedly willing to sell Ferran Torres after an €8 million clause in his transfer agreement emerged as a major obstacle to renewing the Spain forward’s contract.

Torres had appeared firmly in the club’s plans for next season despite periods of inconsistent form, with a new deal previously expected to secure his long-term future at the Catalan side.

However, The Athletic reports that extending the 26-year-old’s contract would trigger an additional €8m payment to Manchester City under the terms of his 2022 transfer.

Torres joined Barcelona from City in a deal worth €55m plus add-ons, negotiated during Mateu Alemany’s spell as the club’s director of football. One of those clauses reportedly requires Barca to make the multi-million euro payment if the forward renews his current terms.

His deal expires on 30 June 2027.

The financial complication is understood to be a key reason sporting director Deco has hesitated to present Torres with a renewal offer, despite Barcelona’s usual reluctance to allow senior players to enter the final year of their contracts.

The situation has now fuelled speculation over a possible move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Barcelona insist they have not received a formal offer from the French champions, although reports in the Catalan media suggest Torres has already made significant progress towards an agreement with PSG.

A sale would offer Barca a pragmatic solution at a time when the club are carefully managing their transfer spending. The Catalans have already invested €80m in Anthony Gordon and remain active in the market for further attacking reinforcements.

Karim Adeyemi is also reportedly among their targets and could provide another option should Torres leave.

The Spain international’s potential departure would continue a major reshaping of Barcelona’s attack. Robert Lewandowski left following the expiry of his contract, while Marcus Rashford returned to his parent club after Barca opted against activating their purchase option.

Torres, nicknamed ‘The Shark’, had previously looked set to remain part of Hansi Flick’s plans. Barcelona delayed contract discussions until after the World Cup, but the €8m renewal clause has now changed the financial equation.

With PSG reportedly circling and Barcelona facing another significant payment if they extend his deal, Torres’ future at the club is increasingly uncertain.
