City Turn It On After The Break To Batter Chelsea And Crank Up Title Race

A dominant second-half blitz sent Manchester City surging back into title contention, as three unanswered goals dismantled Chelsea and piled pressure on league leaders Arsenal.

For 45 minutes, this looked like it could go wrong for City. Chelsea were the sharper side in the first half — Cole Palmer rattled the side netting, João Pedro had a goal ruled out for offside, and Pedro Neto wriggled past Rodri before forcing a fine stop from Gianluigi Donnarumma. City, meanwhile, barely threatened.

Then came the second half. And everything changed.

Nico O’Reilly, City’s standout creative force on the day, broke the deadlock six minutes after the restart — shrugging off Andrey Santos to power home a header from Rayan Cherki’s cross. The Cityzens were off and running.

Six minutes later, they were out of sight. Cherki, already boasting nine PL assists coming into the match, danced across the edge of Chelsea’s box and threaded a perfectly-weighted pass to Marc Guéhi, who finished with equal precision. Ten assists for the season. The Frenchman is some signing.

O’Reilly’s afternoon ended with an injury shortly after, but the party didn’t stop. Jérémy Doku and Cherki combined to strip Moisés Caicedo of possession, and Doku finished coolly to make it three. The Etihad erupted with chants of “Are you watching Arsenal?”

Arsenal were watching — and they won’t have liked what they saw. Having slipped up against Bournemouth earlier in the weekend, Mikel Arteta’s side now see their lead cut to just six points, with City holding a game in hand. Crucially, the two sides meet next week in what could be a defining title showdown.

For Chelsea, the fallout is equally significant. A third consecutive league defeat — their worst such run since May 2023 — leaves Enzo Maresca’s side four points behind fifth-placed Liverpool and with serious questions to answer about their top-five credentials.

City’s unbeaten head-to-head record against Chelsea now stretches to 13 matches. Momentum is firmly in blue — the Sky Blue variety.

Arsenal, you’ve been warned.
