England missed the chance to secure their place in the World Cup knockout stage after being held to a hard-fought 0-0 draw by Ghana in Group L on Tuesday, with the Black Stars producing a disciplined defensive display to earn a valuable point in Boston.
Thomas Tuchel’s side controlled possession for much of the contest but struggled to break down an organised Ghana back line, with clear opportunities scarce during a cagey first half.
The Three Lions emerged with greater urgency after the interval, yet Ghana carried a growing threat on the counter-attack and came agonisingly close to claiming a memorable victory.
A costly defensive error gifted Fatau a clear opening midway through the second half, and after rounding Jordan Pickford, the Ghana forward looked certain to score. However, his goal-bound effort struck teammate Antoine Semenyo in front of an empty net, allowing England a huge escape.
England were forced onto the back foot again moments later before Ezri Konsa produced a vital last-ditch challenge to prevent another dangerous Ghana attack from ending in disaster.
Sensing the need for fresh inspiration, Tuchel turned to his bench, introducing Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, Eberechi Eze, Morgan Rogers and Nico O’Reilly in an attempt to inject pace and creativity into the contest.
The substitutions almost delivered the breakthrough. Saka forced Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare into an outstanding save, while O’Reilly rose highest to head against the crossbar. Harry Kane reacted quickest to the rebound but somehow fired over from close range.
England continued to push forward in the closing stages and thought they had finally found a way through when Marc Guehi directed an effort towards goal, only for a remarkable clearance off the line to preserve Ghana’s resistance.
Despite sustained late pressure, the Black Stars stood firm. Asare produced an assured performance between the posts, while his defenders repeatedly threw themselves into blocks and clearances to frustrate England’s attack.
The result leaves England’s fate still in their own hands, but qualification for the last 16 is not yet secured. Tuchel’s men now head into their final Group L fixture against Panama knowing that another positive result will be required to remove any lingering doubts over progression.
For Ghana, the draw represented a display of resilience and belief, with the Black Stars matching one of the tournament favourites and keeping their own hopes alive heading into the final round of group-stage matches.
