Eustáquio’s late winner sends Canada into historic World Cup last 16

Canada secured a place in the FIFA World Cup last 16 for the first time after Stephen Eustáquio struck deep into stoppage time to seal a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa in Los Angeles.

With both nations appearing in their maiden World Cup knockout fixture, the contest carried enormous significance, but it took until the closing moments for the deadlock to be broken as Canada’s persistence finally paid off.

South Africa made the brighter start and threatened inside the opening stages when Teboho Mokoena tested Maxime Crépeau from distance, although the Canadian goalkeeper dealt comfortably with the effort. At the other end, Jonathan David wasted a promising opportunity, firing a volley wide after finding space inside the penalty area.

Canada gradually established control despite becoming the first World Cup host nation to play a tournament match outside its own borders. Jesse Marsch’s side should have gone ahead midway through the first half when Derek Cornelius met a free header six yards from goal, only to direct his effort straight at Ronwen Williams.

The South Africa goalkeeper continued to frustrate the hosts, producing another fine save to deny Tanitoluwa Oluwaseyi before watching the striker send a second attempt onto the roof of the net. Canada remained firmly on the front foot approaching the interval, but Aubrey Modiba produced a crucial goal-line clearance to keep out Moïse Bombito’s powerful header and preserve parity at half-time.

Opportunities became increasingly scarce after the restart as South Africa tightened defensively, although Canada continued to look the more threatening side. Williams again came to his team’s rescue in the 65th minute, stopping Oluwaseyi before Mbekezeli Mbokazi reacted quickly to prevent Jonathan David from converting the rebound.

Seeking a breakthrough, Marsch introduced Alphonso Davies for his first appearance of the tournament during the closing stages. The Bayern Munich full-back almost made an instant impact with an incisive pass that released Promise David, but the forward dragged his shot narrowly wide.

South Africa threatened only sporadically, with Oswin Appollis forcing Crépeau into a routine save from long range, and their resistance was finally broken in stoppage time.

A loose clearance fell invitingly to Eustáquio on the edge of the penalty area, and the midfielder rifled a superb low finish into the bottom corner to score Canada’s first-ever World Cup knockout goal and spark celebrations among the home supporters.

The narrow victory sends Canada into the Round of 16, where they will face either the Netherlands or Morocco, while South Africa’s memorable World Cup campaign comes to an end after a disciplined but ultimately heartbreaking defeat.
