Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has confirmed the club are closing in on a loan deal to bring Joao Cancelo back to Camp Nou, with the full-back set for a return during the January window.
The Portuguese defender is expected to rejoin the Catalan side for the remainder of the 2025-26 season after Barcelona opted not to make his previous loan permanent last year. Talks are now advancing, with Flick openly welcoming the move.
Cancelo spent the 2023-24 campaign at Barcelona after falling out of favour at Manchester City, offering versatility and attacking threat from both full-back positions. Despite his strong influence, financial constraints prevented a permanent transfer at the time.
Now 31 and turning 32 in May, Cancelo has become one of Europe’s most well-travelled elite defenders, having represented Benfica, Valencia, Inter, Juventus, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona. He joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal permanently in the summer of 2024 but is pushing for a swift return to European football.
Inter explored a reunion at San Siro, but Cancelo prioritised a move back to Barcelona, where he believes his profile and playing style best fit the squad Flick is building.
Barcelona entered the January market seeking defensive reinforcement following Andreas Christensen’s ACL injury. While a centre-back was initially the priority, Flick and sporting director Deco identified Cancelo as a more flexible solution.
With Ronald Araujo nearing a return, Barcelona feel adequately covered centrally. Cancelo’s ability to operate on either flank, and even step into midfield during buildup, adds tactical depth rather than a direct replacement.
Flick stressed the importance of smart recruitment, highlighting Barcelona’s financial reality and reliance on player development. He sees Cancelo as a high-quality veteran who can complement the club’s young core without disrupting long-term planning.
The coach also underlined Cancelo’s offensive contribution, viewing him as an option who can tilt games with creativity rather than simply defend.
Barcelona are currently in Saudi Arabia preparing for the Spanish Super Cup, where they face Athletic Club in the semi-finals. The club hopes to complete the Cancelo deal swiftly so registration can follow ahead of upcoming league fixtures.
The timing is crucial, with domestic and European commitments intensifying later this month.
Araujo is edging closer to a return after taking time away in December, though Flick remains cautious about rushing him back. Meanwhile, concerns persist over Lamine Yamal’s fitness after the winger missed open training sessions and has been working individually in the gym.
These factors further underline the need for experienced depth as Barcelona navigate a demanding schedule.
Cancelo’s previous spell showed his capacity to influence matches high up the pitch, often drifting inside to support midfield progression and overload wide areas. His return would immediately enhance Barcelona’s build-up play and chance creation from deep.
With La Liga action resuming on January 18 away to Real Sociedad, Barcelona are targeting Cancelo’s availability for that trip. The Basque fixture is expected to be a key test in the title race.
If finalised, Cancelo’s return would represent a calculated move by Barcelona, prioritising quality, familiarity, and tactical flexibility. For Flick, it is a short-term solution that supports immediate competitiveness while maintaining long-term squad balance.
