Belgium forward Leandro Trossard says he is eager to carry his impressive club form into the FIFA World Cup after helping Arsenal secure the Premier League title this season.
The 31-year-old joined up with the Belgium squad this week following Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League final defeat and is now focused on making a strong impact at the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
“I really can’t wait to get started,” Trossard told reporters on Friday.
“Everyone has arrived full of enthusiasm, which is a very positive sign. I’ve only had one training session so far, but you can already see that the players are focused and ready for the challenge ahead.”
Trossard played a key role in Arsenal’s successful Premier League campaign and believes the confidence gained from winning major trophies can benefit the Belgian national team.
Asked whether he is currently playing the best football of his career, the winger was cautious but optimistic.
“That’s always difficult to say, but I am certainly in very good form. My goal is to bring that level into the World Cup and help the team as much as possible,” he said.
The former Brighton player added that arriving at international duty after a title-winning season can only be a positive.
“It’s always good when players come into the national team after winning trophies. It gives confidence and experience. We had a fantastic season with Arsenal and we’re very proud of winning the Premier League.”
Although Arsenal fell short in the Champions League final, Trossard said the campaign should still be viewed as a success.
“Of course, we were disappointed with how the Champions League ended. Penalty shootouts can go either way. But overall, we had an incredible season.”
“The celebrations with the fans were amazing. Winning the title and sharing that moment with supporters is something you never forget.”
Trossard also remained tight-lipped when asked about his future at Arsenal amid transfer speculation.
“Right now, I am still an Arsenal player. We will see what happens during the summer,” he said.
Belgium continue their World Cup preparations with a friendly against Tunisia in Brussels on Saturday before travelling to North America on Monday.
The Red Devils begin their Group G campaign against Egypt in Seattle on June 15 as they look to challenge for their first World Cup title.
