Hull City have completed the permanent signing of French midfielder Lucas Gourna-Douath from RB Salzburg, with the 23-year-old agreeing a five-year contract as the Championship club continue reshaping their squad for the 2026–27 season.
The deal follows several days of negotiations between the clubs and was finalised after Gourna-Douath successfully completed his medical. Reports in England and France indicate Hull paid an initial fee of around €3.5–4 million, with performance-related add-ons included in the agreement.
Gourna-Douath arrives with significant top-level experience despite his age. The defensive midfielder made his breakthrough at Saint-Étienne before joining Salzburg in 2022 for what was then a record transfer fee for an Austrian club. He later gained experience in Serie A with Roma and spent the second half of last season on loan at Ligue 1 side Le Havre.
Hull’s recruitment team identified midfield as a priority area after summer departures and sought a player capable of combining defensive stability with progressive passing. Gourna-Douath’s profile fits that requirement, having built a reputation as a ball-winning midfielder comfortable receiving possession under pressure.
The France youth international has represented his country from under-16 through under-21 level and has accumulated more than 60 senior appearances for Salzburg across domestic and European competitions. His development in one of Europe’s strongest talent pathways makes him one of Hull’s most notable acquisitions of the window.

For Hull, the signing also reflects a shift toward younger players with resale potential rather than short-term solutions. The club has been active in strengthening key areas ahead of another promotion push, and Gourna-Douath is expected to compete immediately for a starting role in central midfield.
Tactically, his arrival offers greater balance in front of the defence. Standing 1.85 metres tall, Gourna-Douath is known for his physical presence, ball recoveries and ability to transition play quickly, qualities that should complement Hull’s more attack-minded midfield options.
The move represents a fresh start for the Frenchman after limited opportunities to establish himself permanently at Salzburg following loan spells away from Austria. A regular role in English football could also strengthen his long-term ambitions of returning to the senior France national team conversation.
Hull City will now look to integrate Gourna-Douath into the squad ahead of their upcoming Championship fixtures, with the midfielder expected to be available for selection once registration formalities are completed.
