Luis Enrique Hails ‘Historic Season’ as PSG Cruise into Club World Cup Quarters
Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique has described his side’s season as “historic” after they breezed past Inter Miami with a dominant 4-0 victory in the Club World Cup last 16 on Sunday.
Already crowned Ligue 1, French Cup, and Champions League winners, PSG are now closing in on a clean sweep of silverware – with the Club World Cup the final piece of the puzzle.
“This is clearly a historic season for our club,” Enrique told reporters after the match. “We intend to keep making history in this competition.”
Sunday’s clash came with an added emotional twist for the former Barcelona coach, as he reunited with Lionel Messi and Inter Miami boss Javier Mascherano – two key figures from his spell at the Camp Nou between 2014 and 2017.
“It was a special match for me,” Enrique admitted. “I met people who are very important to me – people I shared many highs and lows with.”
Asked whether he’d be open to coaching Messi again in Europe, Enrique smiled but deflected.
“That’s a question for him,” he replied. “We all know the kind of player he is, and he still has that quality. It’s never easy to face someone like Leo. He made it tough, but I think as a team we did an excellent job.”
PSG were ruthless in the opening 45 minutes, racing to a commanding lead that left Miami with too much ground to make up.
“I think we really dominated the first half – we didn’t give them a single chance,” said Enrique. “In the second half, maybe because of the scoreline, Inter Miami created a bit more and gave us some problems.”
With a blockbuster quarter-final tie looming against either Flamengo or Bayern Munich, Enrique was quick to switch focus back to the mission ahead.
“We’ve got to stay sharp,” he said. “I’m not thinking about holidays or next season – the only thing that matters is recovering well and preparing for the next game in the best way possible.”
