Man United believe players back Amorim – Sources

Manchester United’s leadership remain confident that the squad fully supports head coach Ruben Amorim after a series of positive internal discussions, sources told Reuters.

The club eased mounting pressure on Amorim following a 2-0 victory over Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday. Key players, including Mason Mount and Matthijs de Ligt, have publicly affirmed their backing of the Portuguese manager despite a difficult start to the season. Mount emphasized the unity within the dressing room, stating the players were “100% behind the gaffer,” while De Ligt expressed his support even after a recent 3-1 defeat at Brentford.

According to sources, United CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox have engaged informally with squad members, including captain Bruno Fernandes and the club’s leadership group, reinforcing their belief in the existing backing for Amorim. These meetings were not formal reviews of the coach’s future but aimed at gauging the overall atmosphere within the team.

Amorim, who joined from Sporting CP and is under contract until 2027, has been under scrutiny due to inconsistent results. Any decision regarding his tenure would require input from majority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co-owner Joel Glazer, with Berrada and Wilcox playing advisory roles. Since Ratcliffe’s minority stake acquisition in February 2024, Berrada and Wilcox have adopted a more hands-on approach, working from their offices at Carrington—recently renovated with a £50 million investment—to maintain closer contact with the squad and coaching staff.

This shift contrasts with the period under former CEO Richard Arnold, who departed late 2023 and preferred working from Old Trafford rather than the training ground. It also recalls the era of Ed Woodward, whose more visible presence at Carrington included his decisive role in sacking former manager Jose Mourinho in 2018 amid reports of waning player support.

The internal reassurance for Amorim suggests Manchester United are seeking stability and continuity while addressing tactical and personnel challenges. Amorim’s profile as a tactically astute manager with a focus on aggressive pressing and structured build-up play aligns with the club’s strategy to evolve their style and squad under new ownership dynamics. How this backing translates into sustained performance improvements will be critical for both the club’s ambitions and Amorim’s managerial trajectory.
