Lionel Messi accounted for one goal and five (!) assists against Emil Forsberg’s New York Red Bulls.
Inter Miami overturned 0-1 and won 6-2.
– I don’t think we will see anything like this again, says Inter Miami coach Gerard “Tata” Martino according to ESPN.
Lionel Messi, 36, has been responsible for many eyebrow-raising efforts during his career. During the night between Saturday and Sunday, when Argentina’s Inter Miami took on Emil Forsberg’s New York Red Bull, he accounted for another one.
When Inter Miami won 6-2, Messi scored a goal – and five (!) assists.
After Dante Vanzeir gave visiting New York the lead in the 30th minute, Messi took over in the second act of the match.
The 36-year-old opened the scoring by assisting Matías Rojas to make it 1-1 in the 48th minute before giving Miami a 2-1 lead himself two minutes later, in the 50th minute.
With the hour mark, he once again assisted Rojas, making it 3-1, before delivering three straight assists to his old gunman Luis Suárez – who was thus credited with his first MLS hat-trick.
New York reduced in the very last minutes of the game through Emil Forsberg on a penalty, but it only improved the goal difference.
– Messi always makes a difference. He contributed six goals today. I don’t think we’ll see anything like this ever again, says Inter Miami coach Gerard “Tata” Martino according to ESPN.
ESPN further reports that with the match’s performance, Messi became the first player in MLS history to contribute five assists in a single match.
Lionel Messi has been recorded for eleven goals and twelve assists in eleven appearances since the start of the American season. It includes both MLS and Concacaf Champions Cup matches.
