Mourinho sets out Real Madrid vision ahead of Espanyol test

Jose Mourinho began his second spell in charge of Real Madrid with a measured message of ambition, insisting that work will be non-negotiable as he attempts to build a side capable of accommodating Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham.

Mourinho, speaking at his first press conference since returning to the Bernabeu, struck a notably reflective tone ahead of Saturday’s La Liga meeting with Espanyol.

The Portuguese coach acknowledged that his approach has changed since his previous spell at the club, suggesting that the lessons of his earlier career have shaped the manager he is today.

Rather than revisiting old disputes, Mourinho said he had chosen to begin with a clean slate, including in his assessment of midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde.

“I have gathered a great deal of information, not only regarding Tchouameni and Fede Valverde, but I have opted for a clean slate. I have monitored Aurelien closely since his arrival, but I saw no reason to intervene or revisit past difficulties that affected everyone, as it was clear to me from the outset that the situation had normalised.”

Mourinho’s immediate tactical challenge will be finding a system that allows Real Madrid’s three attacking stars, Mbappe, Vinicius and Bellingham, to operate at their best without compromising the team’s balance.

The manager said elite players naturally want to share the pitch with teammates capable of matching their quality and understanding, but accepted that combining three such influential figures would demand careful tactical planning.

“Elite players feel a sense of frustration when surrounded by those not at their level. They become exasperated and vocal because others cannot match their speed of thought or technical execution. The best simply want to play alongside the best. Naturally, the tactical configuration becomes more complex. Ancelotti identified the ideal role for Vinicius Jr with Brazil, Deschamps did the same for Kylian Mbappe, and Tuchel found the solution for Jude Bellingham. Finding the perfect balance for all three presents a greater challenge for me, but that is the mission. My goal is for all three to feel entirely at ease whenever they are on the pitch together.”

The comments underline the scale of Mourinho’s task. Each player has established himself in a different role at club or international level, meaning the challenge is not simply fitting three names into the same starting XI but creating a structure that allows their individual strengths to complement one another.

Vinicius’ future was another issue addressed by Mourinho. The Brazilian forward’s contract situation had attracted attention, but the new coach said his main concern was whether the player wanted to remain at Real Madrid.

“Upon my arrival, once the contract situation was explained, my primary concern was whether he truly wanted to stay. Once the club confirmed he did, it became a simple matter of negotiations and agents. His desire to remain here gave me complete peace of mind.”

Mourinho also made clear that technical quality alone will not determine who succeeds under his management.

The Portuguese stressed that every player will have defensive responsibilities, although those duties will vary depending on their position and role within the team’s structure.

“Work is non-negotiable. Pressing and covering space are distinct tasks, and different players will be assigned different roles. However, the notion of standing by and waiting for a teammate to regain possession simply will not be tolerated here.”

That emphasis on collective responsibility is likely to be one of the defining features of Mourinho’s Real Madrid.

With Espanyol next on the schedule, the first competitive test will offer an early indication of how quickly the squad can adapt to his demands. For Mourinho, however, the immediate objective appears broader than the result of one match.

He has returned to Madrid with a clear mandate: establish a disciplined structure, settle the futures of key players and find a tactical formula capable of bringing Real Madrid’s most gifted attackers together.

The first chapter of his new era begins against Espanyol on Saturday.
