Renato Sanches is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer after the French champions indicated they are prepared to terminate his contract, according to a report by journalist Sébastien Denis.
The 29-year-old Portugal midfielder remains under contract with PSG until June 2027, but the club is reportedly willing to release him if he secures another destination. Sanches is no longer part of Luis Enrique’s plans after spending the last three seasons away from the Parisian side on loan.
Several clubs have already emerged as potential destinations. Soccerway reports interest from two unnamed French clubs, while Ipswich Town and Hull City in England and Union Berlin in Germany are also monitoring his situation. A separate report published this week also identified Ipswich and Hull as clubs interested in the midfielder.
Sanches’ departure would bring an underwhelming PSG spell closer to its conclusion. The Portuguese midfielder joined the club from Lille in August 2022, signing a five-year contract after establishing himself as an important player during Lille’s Ligue 1 title-winning campaign in 2020-21. PSG officially confirmed at the time that his contract would run until June 2027.
His first season in Paris produced limited opportunities. Sanches made 23 Ligue 1 appearances during the 2022-23 campaign, but accumulated only 717 league minutes, according to FBref. Across all competitions, he played 27 matches and scored twice.
The lack of continuity became a recurring feature of his career in the French capital. He subsequently spent time on loan at AS Roma, Benfica and Panathinaikos, preventing him from establishing a regular place in the PSG midfield.
His 2023-24 loan at Roma was particularly limited, with seven Serie A appearances and 146 minutes recorded in the league. He returned to Benfica for the following season, making 10 league appearances, before moving to Panathinaikos for the 2025-26 campaign.
At Panathinaikos, Sanches enjoyed a more substantial European role. He appeared in seven Europa League matches during the 2025-26 season, starting six, and played 522 minutes as the Greek club reached the round of 16. He also made 14 league appearances, scoring once.
Despite that experience, PSG’s reported willingness to end his contract suggests the club sees little prospect of Sanches returning to its first-team plans. The midfielder has also reportedly rejected approaches from Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer because he wants to continue his career in Europe.
That decision could leave the former Golden Boy winner with several options as the transfer market develops. Ipswich and Hull would offer a route into English football, while Union Berlin represents a potential move to the Bundesliga. Interest from France could also give Sanches the opportunity to remain in Ligue 1, where he previously produced some of the strongest football of his career.
Sanches emerged at Benfica as one of Europe’s most highly regarded young midfielders and won the 2016 Golden Boy award after helping Portugal win the European Championship that summer. He later moved to Bayern Munich before joining Lille, where his performances helped the club win the 2020-21 Ligue 1 title.
The challenge now is finding a club willing to give him the regular football that has proved difficult to secure since his move to PSG. With the French champions reportedly ready to facilitate his departure without a transfer fee, Sanches could soon have an opportunity to restart his career elsewhere in Europe.
For PSG, terminating the contract would close a chapter that never developed as expected. For Sanches, it could provide a fresh start after several seasons dominated by loans and limited playing time in Paris.
