Senegal seek World Cup lifeline as Iraq battle to keep slim hopes alive

Senegal and Iraq head into their final Group I fixture in Toronto on Thursday knowing victory is essential if either side is to preserve hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Neither nation has managed a point from their opening two matches, leaving qualification prospects hanging by a thread ahead of a contest that could determine who avoids finishing bottom of the group.

For Senegal, the campaign has fallen well short of expectations. Appearing at a third consecutive World Cup, the Lions of Teranga arrived with ambitions of making a deep run but have instead suffered defeats to France and Norway, conceding six goals across the two matches.

Their 3-2 loss to Norway was particularly concerning from a defensive standpoint, marking the first time this century that Senegal have conceded at least three goals in successive matches. Another defeat would also see them lose all three games in a single World Cup tournament for the first time in their history.

Despite those setbacks, there remains reason for optimism. Senegal’s recent victories have largely been built on defensive discipline, with eight clean sheets recorded in their last ten international wins. They will hope a return to that solidity can provide the platform for a crucial result.

Iraq, meanwhile, entered only the second World Cup appearance in the nation’s history aware of the challenge posed by a group featuring France, Norway and Senegal. Consecutive losses to Norway and France have underlined that difficulty, with defensive lapses proving costly throughout the tournament.

A 4-1 defeat to Norway was followed by a 3-0 loss against France, leaving Iraq with a significantly inferior goal difference that could ultimately undermine their qualification chances even if they secure three points in Toronto.

Clean sheets have been difficult to come by for Jesús Casas’ side, who have managed just one shutout in their previous eight internationals. Unless that record improves, Iraq face the prospect of ending their World Cup campaign without a point.

The meeting will be the first between the two nations at senior international level. Senegal can draw confidence from their previous World Cup encounters against Asian opposition, having avoided defeat in both such matches with one win and one draw.

Recent trends suggest goals could be on the agenda. Four of Senegal’s last five matches have produced more than 3.5 goals, while Iraq’s previous six games have all featured at least one goal inside the opening 30 minutes. The importance of scoring first is also evident, with the side netting the opening goal going on to win nine of Iraq’s last ten matches.

Much of Senegal’s attacking threat is expected to come from Ismaïla Sarr, who struck twice against Norway. Although it was his first scoring appearance in 13 internationals that ended in defeat, his performance offered a reminder of the quality capable of turning a game in Senegal’s favour.

Iraq will look towards Ali Yousif for inspiration after he scored the winner in last month’s 1-0 victory over Andorra, their most recent success. The forward, however, also carries disciplinary baggage, having received Iraq’s last red card during a pre-tournament friendly against Venezuela.

Both sides have fitness concerns ahead of the encounter. Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy was forced off with an injury against Norway, while Iraq striker Aymen Hussein was also withdrawn through injury during the defeat to France.

With Senegal continuing to show attacking promise, particularly after the interval where six of their last seven goals have arrived, they will start as favourites to claim their first victory of the tournament. Iraq, meanwhile, must find defensive resilience that has largely been absent in recent weeks if they are to keep their World Cup dream alive.
