Solskjaer Emerges as Leading Candidate for Manchester United Caretaker Role

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has moved to the front of the queue to become Manchester United’s caretaker manager following the club’s decision to part ways with Ruben Amorim, with reports indicating the Norwegian is open to a return to Old Trafford.

United confirmed Amorim’s dismissal on Monday after a difficult run of results, and discussions are already underway as the club looks for a short-term solution. Solskjaer, who managed United between 2018 and 2021, is understood to be one of the most serious options being considered.

According to The Athletic, the former United striker is viewed internally as a strong candidate due to his familiarity with the club and his previous experience stepping in on an interim basis. Ruud van Nistelrooy is also in the frame, having taken temporary charge before Amorim’s appointment in 2024 following Erik ten Hag’s exit.

The situation carries clear historical parallels. Solskjaer was initially appointed as interim manager before earning the role on a permanent basis, and his continued residence in Cheshire would allow for an immediate return if talks progress quickly. There is also a belief that another caretaker spell could reopen the door to a longer-term position.

Solskjaer’s first spell delivered relative stability during a turbulent post Sir Alex Ferguson era. He guided United to consecutive top four finishes, the first manager since Ferguson to achieve that feat, and led the club to the Europa League final in the 2020 to 21 season, where they were narrowly beaten by Villarreal on penalties.

Old Trafford has rarely been short of atmosphere during moments of transition, and the current mood around the club is one of uncertainty mixed with urgency. Senior figures are keen to restore calm ahead of a demanding run of fixtures, with the dressing room needing immediate direction.

There have been no dramatic boardroom confrontations, but the decision to remove Amorim followed a sustained six-week slump that ultimately proved decisive. United’s hierarchy are now prioritising continuity and player buy-in over long-term restructuring.

During his previous tenure, Solskjaer was often praised for his man-management and ability to reconnect the squad with supporters. His teams were known for quick transitions, reliance on academy graduates, and strong performances in big away matches, even if silverware ultimately proved elusive.

The second half of the season now looms as a defining period. United must stabilise quickly while the search for a permanent manager continues behind the scenes, with results likely to influence the club’s broader strategic direction.

There is late intrigue around how quickly a caretaker could be appointed. For now, Under-21 coach Darren Fletcher will take charge for the upcoming midweek clash against Burnley, but a short-term appointment could follow soon if negotiations accelerate.

For Manchester United, the coming days will shape the remainder of the campaign. A familiar face may once again be tasked with steadying the ship, as Solskjaer stands ready for a potential second chapter at a club he has long described as family.
