Nico Williams Snubs Barcelona, Signs New Athletic Deal

Athletic Club winger Nico Williams said he rejected a move to FC Barcelona during the summer transfer window because he wanted to remain close to his family, adding that his decision to renew with the Basque side until 2035 was driven by personal conviction rather than market pressure.

The twenty-three-year-old spoke days after facing Barcelona at the Camp Nou, where he was booed following months of speculation that he was set to join the Catalan club. Williams told GQ in an interview published on Thursday that emotional ties outweighed the prospect of a high-profile transfer.

“I have always listened to my feelings and followed my heart,” Williams said. “Here in Bilbao I have the people I love, the ones I turn to before making any big decision.”

Williams said his brother and teammate Iñaki Williams played a major role throughout the negotiations, providing counsel amid criticism from some fans. He said the chance to play in the Champions League together contributed to his final choice.

“I always listen to my brother; his advice is invaluable,” Williams said. “Being able to play in the Champions League together is something we have imagined since we were little.”

Athletic reached the competition this season for the first time since 2014. Williams said the qualification reinforced his commitment to helping the club pursue silverware over the long term. “I want to keep growing, win trophies with this club, and leave a legacy that makes our fans proud,” he said.

Barcelona had targeted Williams in part because of his strong on-field connection with Lamine Yamal, the teenage winger with whom he has developed a close relationship in the Spanish national team. Williams praised the seventeen-year-old’s attitude and development.

“Lamine has incredible talent and he shows it every day,” Williams said.

He also addressed criticism directed at Yamal for off-field matters, including social media attention around the player’s recent eighteenth birthday. Williams said expectations on young footballers can be disproportionate.

“Everyone lives their life how they want, but the important thing is to be professional and give everything when it is time,” Williams said. “As long as there is respect and commitment, I do not see any problem.”

Athletic face Real Betis on Sunday as they continue their push to remain in the top four of LaLiga.
