Girona FC came from behind to secure a valuable 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad on Tuesday, moving out of the LaLiga relegation zone and extending their unbeaten run against the Basque side.
Facing growing pressure near the bottom of the table, Girona started aggressively at the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi and nearly took an early lead through Viktor Tsygankov, whose effort was tipped onto the post inside the opening minutes.
The home side continued to threaten, with Joel Roca and Arnau Martínez both going close as Girona searched for a breakthrough.
Despite Girona’s strong start, Real Sociedad struck first in the 28th minute. Defender Jon Martín rose above the defence to head home from a corner delivered by Sergio Gómez.
The visitors suffered an injury setback soon after when Ander Barrenetxea was forced off, but they held their advantage until halftime thanks to several important saves from goalkeeper Álex Remiro.
Girona maintained their attacking pressure after the break, with Tsygankov continuing to cause problems and Roca narrowly missing the target on multiple occasions.
The equaliser finally arrived in the 66th minute when substitute Cristhian Stuani finished first time from Martínez’s low cross to spark huge celebrations among the home supporters.
Late substitute Claudio Echeverri almost completed the comeback for Girona, but his effort drifted just wide in the closing stages.
The result leaves Girona one point above the relegation zone with only a handful of matches remaining, while also extending Real Sociedad’s winless streak in LaLiga to six matches.
For Girona manager Míchel, the point could prove crucial as the club fights to secure survival in Spain’s top flight.
