Real Madrid bounced back from their recent defeat to FC Barcelona with a 2-0 victory over already relegated Real Oviedo in LaLiga on Tuesday.
Goals from Gonzalo García and Jude Bellingham secured the win at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, extending Madrid’s unbeaten home run to five matches.
With both teams already guaranteed to finish the season in their respective positions, second for Madrid and bottom for Oviedo, the match carried little significance in the standings. However, the home side showed greater attacking intent throughout.
Madrid nearly opened the scoring early when García set up Franco Mastantuono, whose close range effort was saved by Oviedo goalkeeper Aarón Escandell.
Trent Alexander-Arnold also went close midway through the first half with a long range strike that drifted narrowly wide, while Brahim Díaz and Vinícius Júnior both threatened as Madrid increased the pressure.
Despite Madrid’s control, Oviedo wasted a major chance before halftime when Nacho Vidal fired over from close range.
The visitors were punished moments later as Díaz won possession high up the pitch before finding García, who calmly finished to score his fifth LaLiga goal of the season.
The second half saw Oviedo continue to push for an equaliser, with Santi Cazorla receiving a warm reception from the Bernabéu crowd after coming on as a substitute.
Oviedo created opportunities through Alberto Reina and Vidal, but neither could find the target.
Madrid then introduced Kylian Mbappé for his return from injury, although it was fellow substitute Bellingham who sealed the victory late on with a powerful finish from the edge of the area.
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois preserved the clean sheet with a late save to deny Haissem Hassan.
The result gives Madrid an immediate response after their defeat in El Clasico and continues their strong defensive record against Oviedo in recent meetings.
