Harry Kane has revealed that a future career as an NFL kicker is becoming a more serious possibility, although the England captain remains focused on extending his football career for several more years. The 33-year-old Bayern Munich striker discussed the idea while on international duty with England on Wednesday. Kane said he could explore American football more seriously depending on how his football career develops over the next five or six years.
For now, there is no suggestion that Kane is preparing to leave football. He remains one of the leading strikers in Europe and is coming off an exceptional 2025/26 campaign in which he scored 73 goals in 65 competitive appearances for Bayern and England. Bayern also confirmed that Kane helped the club win the Bundesliga, the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup and the DFB Cup.
Kane Sees Kicking As A Realistic Option
Kane has spoken about playing in the NFL before, but his latest comments suggest he is giving the idea more serious consideration. The striker believes his experience taking penalties could provide a useful starting point if he eventually attempts to become an NFL kicker. He also acknowledged that making the transition would require significant preparation rather than simply relying on his football ability.
Kane said he would be prepared to spend between six months and a year practising if he eventually decided to pursue the move. His interest in the NFL is not new. Kane has followed the sport for years and previously spoke about wanting to try kicking after his football career. In 2025, he again described becoming an NFL kicker as something that remained in the back of his mind.
MLS Could Help Kane Combine Both Sports
Kane also raised an unusual possibility involving Major League Soccer. The England forward suggested that playing in MLS at some point could potentially allow him to combine a football career in the United States with his ambitions in the NFL because of the different sporting calendars. That remains only an idea at this stage, with Kane stressing that his priority is continuing to play football while he feels capable of performing at the highest level.
There is already a prominent example of a footballer successfully moving into NFL kicking. Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey played soccer at Notre Dame before pursuing American football and eventually reaching the NFL. Aubrey has since established himself as one of the league’s leading kickers and signed a record four-year, $28 million contract with Dallas in April 2026. Aubrey’s career demonstrates that a transition from soccer to NFL kicking is possible, although Kane would still face the technical and competitive demands of learning a different sport.
Kane’s Immediate Future Remains At Bayern
While the NFL idea provides an interesting glimpse into Kane’s long-term plans, his immediate future remains firmly connected to Bayern Munich. Kane is currently in his fourth season with the German champions and has continued to produce at an exceptional rate. He has also indicated that discussions over a new Bayern contract are progressing, with the striker saying the two sides are fairly close to reaching an agreement.
For Kane, then, the NFL remains a potential second sporting chapter rather than an immediate career change. His focus is still on scoring goals for Bayern and England, while the possibility of becoming an NFL kicker remains an ambition he could explore once his football career begins to wind down.
