- How Manchester City Compare
The quick answer: Manchester City have won 38 major trophies. That number rises to 45 if you also count the seven second-tier league titles the club won during its long history outside the top flight.
Few clubs have changed as much as City in the last 20 years. Before 2011, the club had gone 35 years without a major trophy. Since then, it has won the Champions League, a historic Treble and a record four English titles in a row. Its most recent trophy was the 2025-26 FA Cup, won in May 2026.
This guide gives the full breakdown by competition, explains why different websites report different totals, and follows the story of City’s silverware from the first FA Cup in 1904 to the end of the Pep Guardiola era.

Why Trophy Totals Differ
If you search for City’s trophy count, you will find several different numbers. This is not because sources disagree about results. It is because they use different rules about which competitions count.
The Community Shield is the main reason. It is a one-off match before each English season between the league champions and the FA Cup winners. Some outlets treat it as a major trophy, while others see it as a curtain-raiser. Remove City’s seven Shields and the major total falls from 38 to 31.
Second-tier titles cause the other difference. City won the old Second Division six times and the First Division (then the second tier) in 2001-02. These are real honours, but most modern counts leave them out because they were won below the top level.
Manchester City Trophies by Competition
League titles: 10
City have been champions of England ten times. The first two came in the old First Division in 1936-37 and 1967-68. The other eight have come in the Premier League: 2011-12, 2013-14, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24. Only Manchester United, with 13, have won more Premier League titles.
FA Cup: 8
City won their first major trophy in 1904, beating Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in the FA Cup final. Further wins followed in 1934, 1956, 1969, 2011, 2019, 2023 and 2026. The 2019 final was a record-equalling 6-0 win over Watford, the biggest winning margin in an FA Cup final.
League Cup: 9
City have won the League Cup nine times: 1970, 1976, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2026. Their four wins in a row between 2018 and 2021 equalled Liverpool’s record from the early 1980s. Only Liverpool, with ten, have lifted the trophy more often.
International trophies: 4
City’s first European trophy was the 1970 European Cup Winners’ Cup, won 2-1 against Gornik Zabrze in Vienna. They waited 53 years for the next. In 2023, they won the Champions League, then added the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla and the FIFA Club World Cup against Fluminense.
Community Shield: 7
City have won the Shield in 1937, 1968, 1972, 2012, 2018, 2019 and 2024. The latest came after a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Wembley, with City winning the penalty shootout.
From 1904 to 1976: City’s First Golden Periods
City’s early success came in short bursts. Billy Meredith captained the side to the 1904 FA Cup, and the club won its first league title in 1937. The most successful period before the modern era came under Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison, whose team won the league in 1968, the FA Cup in 1969, and both the League Cup and the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970.
The 1976 League Cup, won 2-1 against Newcastle United, was the club’s last major trophy for 35 years. In that time, City were relegated several times and even dropped to the third tier, winning promotion through the 1999 play-offs after a dramatic shootout win over Gillingham at Wembley.
The Takeover and the Breakthrough
Everything changed in September 2008, when the Abu Dhabi United Group, led by Sheikh Mansour, bought the club. Heavy investment followed, and the trophy drought ended in 2011 when Yaya Toure scored the only goal in the FA Cup final against Stoke City.
A year later came one of the most famous goals in Premier League history. On the final day of the 2011-12 season, Sergio Aguero scored in stoppage time to beat Queens Park Rangers 3-2 and win City’s first league title in 44 years, on goal difference ahead of Manchester United.
The Pep Guardiola Era: 20 Trophies in 10 Years
Pep Guardiola arrived in 2016 with a reputation built at Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Over the next decade, he won 20 trophies with City: six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup. Without the Shields, that is 17 major honours.
His teams set new standards. In 2017-18, City became the first Premier League side to reach 100 points. In 2018-19, they completed the first domestic Treble by an English men’s team, winning the league, FA Cup and League Cup. Between 2020-21 and 2023-24, they won four league titles in a row, something no club had done before in English top-flight history.
The peak came in 2022-23. City won the Premier League and the FA Cup, then beat Inter Milan 1-0 in Istanbul, with Rodri scoring, to win the Champions League for the first time. Only Manchester United in 1999 had previously won that Treble as an English club.
Guardiola’s final season, 2025-26, brought two more cups. Nico O’Reilly scored twice in four minutes to beat Arsenal 2-0 in the League Cup final in March, and Antoine Semenyo’s back-heel beat Chelsea 1-0 in the FA Cup final in May. City finished second in the league to Arsenal. Explaining his exit, Guardiola said: “Deep inside, I know it’s my time.”
Where Things Stand in 2026-27
Enzo Maresca, who worked as an assistant to Guardiola at City before managing Leicester City and Chelsea, took over in the summer of 2026. His first competitive match was the Community Shield in August, which City lost 3-0 to Arsenal in Cardiff. That means the FA Cup won on 16 May 2026 remains City’s most recent trophy.
How Manchester City Compare
City’s ten league titles still trail Manchester United and Liverpool, who have 20 each, and Arsenal, who have 14. The difference is speed. Eight of City’s ten titles have come since 2012, and 26 of their 38 major trophies have arrived since the 2008 takeover. No English club has collected silverware faster over the last 15 years.
