Jay-Jay Okocha has backed Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo in football’s greatest-ever debate, saying the Argentine is “from another planet” because of his exceptional natural talent.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast with former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel, the former Super Eagles captain was asked to choose between the two modern football icons. Okocha praised both players but said Messi’s creativity and effortless brilliance gave him the edge.
According to Okocha on The Obi One Podcast, Messi represents football as an art form, while Ronaldo’s greatness has been built on extraordinary dedication and elite goalscoring ability.
“Messi for me. Ronaldo is special, but he’s a goalscorer. Messi is on another planet. Messi is art. He was born to play football,” Okocha said.
The Nigerian legend stressed that his preference should not be interpreted as criticism of Ronaldo. Instead, he described the Portuguese forward as one of the finest finishers the game has produced, comparing his instinct in front of goal to the qualities seen in elite strikers such as Erling Haaland.
Okocha’s opinion carries weight because of his own standing in world football. The former attacking midfielder built a celebrated career with clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Fenerbahce and Bolton Wanderers, earning global recognition for his dribbling, close control and inventive style of play.
The Messi-Ronaldo rivalry has defined an era of football for nearly two decades. Between them, the pair have won 13 Ballon d’Or awards, multiple UEFA Champions League titles and league championships in England, Spain, France and Italy, while setting many of the sport’s most remarkable scoring records.
Okocha has consistently admired both players throughout the years, but his position has remained unchanged: when the conversation shifts from achievement to pure footballing artistry, Messi stands alone.
“Messi is art. He was born to play football.”
