Nigeria Suffer Heavy Defeat to Guinea-Bissau in AFCON Qualifier

Nigeria suffered a damaging 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday evening, putting their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations under pressure. The result gave the Djurtus a major boost in Group L, while the Super Eagles were left to reflect on a disappointing performance in which they failed to turn their chances into goals.

Eric Chelle made three changes to his starting XI, with Bright Osayi-Samuel, Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi brought into the team. Nigeria started positively and came close to taking the lead when Ademola Lookman met Alex Iwobi’s pass in the 14th minute, but his left-footed attempt was kept out by the Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper.

The hosts responded almost immediately and took the lead a minute later. Franculino Dju received the ball on the left side before moving inside and curling a well-placed shot beyond Stanley Nwabali. Nigeria tried to respond, with Onyeka hitting the side netting, while Nwabali had to make a save from Beto before the interval.

Chelle made two changes at half-time as Moses Usor and Moses Simon replaced Onyeka and Awoniyi. The substitutions gave Nigeria more attacking options, and both players had opportunities to level the score, but neither could find a way past the Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper. Nigeria continued to search for an equaliser, but their inability to convert promising opportunities eventually proved costly. Guinea-Bissau doubled their advantage in the 66th minute when Mama Balde got away from Osayi-Samuel before finishing to put the hosts firmly in control.

The Super Eagles still had chances to get back into the contest. Tolu Arokodare and George Ilenikhena both had opportunities to reduce the deficit, but Nigeria could not take advantage. Guinea-Bissau remained composed and eventually added a third goal when Alvaro Djalo struck in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Nigeria Face Qualification Pressure

The defeat was particularly painful because Nigeria had opportunities to change the course of the match. Lookman had an early chance, while Nigeria created further openings after the break, but poor finishing meant Guinea-Bissau were able to protect their lead and grow in confidence as the game progressed. The result also produced an unwanted piece of history for the Super Eagles. Nigeria had not previously lost to an African opponent by three goals since their 5-1 defeat against Algeria at the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations.

There was also a reminder of another painful qualifying campaign. In September 2014, Congo defeated Nigeria 3-2 in Calabar during the qualifiers for the 2015 AFCON. The Super Eagles eventually failed to reach that tournament, making the latest defeat another worrying moment for the three-time African champions.

Guinea-Bissau now sit at the top of Group L with six points and a +5 goal difference. Nigeria have three points and a -2 goal difference, leaving them with plenty of work to do in the remaining matches. Tanzania’s position as one of the tournament’s co-hosts means the qualification battle in the group is further complicated. Nigeria must now fight with Guinea-Bissau and the Barea for the remaining qualifying place, with every point becoming increasingly important as the campaign continues.
