Sporting CP travelled to northern France looking to keep their strong start to the season going, and they returned to Lisbon with exactly that. A clinical, disciplined display saw Rui Borges’ side beat RC Lens 2-0 at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, making it two wins from two in the UEFA Champions League and keeping their unbeaten record across all competitions in 2026/27 intact.
Lens Dominate the Ball but Lack a Cutting Edge
Lens controlled the ball early on but found little joy against a well-organised Sporting back line. Florian Thauvin’s effort was the only attempt that tested the visiting goalkeeper in the first 20 minutes.
As the half went on, Sporting settled and began to threaten. Their breakthrough came around the midway point of the first half, when Nestory Irankunda slipped a clever ball across the six-yard area and Luis Suarez tapped home from close range.
Lens nearly fell further behind just after the half-hour. Suarez raced clear of the defence and was through on goal, but Robin Risser stood firm and made a crucial stop.
Moments later, the hosts came agonisingly close to levelling. Franjo Ivanovic bent a shot from around 25 yards that beat the goalkeeper but cannoned off the frame of the goal, much to the relief of the away fans.
Goalkeepers Shine After the Break
The second half started slowly before bursting into life around the hour. Kaique Pereira flew across his goal to push Amadou Haidara’s powerful long-range strike over the crossbar, preserving Sporting’s lead.
The action then switched ends quickly. Risser produced an unusual but effective save to deny Joao Simoes, and soon after, Kaique was called upon again, reacting sharply to keep out Odsonne Edouard’s attempt at the near post.
Doumbia Seals It on the Counter
Yannick Cahuzac’s side pushed bodies forward in search of a leveller, but that left gaps at the back, and Rui Borges’ men took full advantage. Substitute Silas Andersen picked out Issa Doumbia with a superb pass, and the midfielder kept his composure one-on-one, guiding the ball past Risser to wrap up the win and silence the home crowd.
Analysis: Patience and Efficiency Win the Day
This was a performance built on patience rather than flair. Sporting were happy to let Lens have the ball in the early stages, trusting their defensive shape and waiting for the right moments to strike. When those moments came, they were ruthless, turning a handful of quality chances into two goals.
Kaique Pereira deserves major credit. His saves from Haidara and Edouard came at key moments when Lens were building pressure, and without them, the night could have looked very different. Rui Borges’ substitutions also made an impact, with Silas Andersen providing the decisive pass for the second goal.
For Lens, the frustration will be that they created enough to get something from the game. Ivanovic hitting the woodwork and Risser’s strong individual performance showed they were competitive, but a lack of sharpness in the final third, combined with leaving space at the back late on, cost them dearly.

What’s Next?
With six points from a possible six, Sporting are in a strong position early in the league phase and will be aiming to build on this momentum in their next Champions League outing against LASK on 21/10/2026. Before then, attention turns back to domestic action, where they face Academico Viseu on 25/10/2026.
Lens, meanwhile, will need to respond quickly. Their next European test comes against Club Brugge KV on 21/10/2026, and a positive result there would put their campaign firmly back on track. In Ligue 1, they take on Troyes on 17/10/2026.
